Who is Lobo? (DC Characters)
Who is Lobo? Profile
Lobo is a popular bounty hunter antihero/antivillain in DC Comics. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 (June 1983). Lobo is an alien from the planet Czarnia who possesses enhanced strength and stamina (and, eventually, regenerative abilities).
His name means “he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it.” Arriving shortly after the rise of similar dark heroes and villains such as the Punisher and Wolverine at Marvel Comics, DC readers did not warm to the character as quickly.
He would return in his own series in the 1990s in response to the booming popularity of more violent heroes, an issue DC Comics touched upon in their landmark publication Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross in 1996.
In DC Comics’ “New 52” reboot, Lobo emerged as a slave trader who murdered his entire race (Rob Liefeld, Deathstroke #9–12, July–October 2012). In the “Rebirth” reboot, Lobo was returned to his original backstory, becoming a member of the Suicide Squad (Joshua Williamson and Jason Fabok, Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #1–6, February–March 2017).
In 2019, the character was introduced into the second season of the SyFy cable television series Krypton, where he was portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan. In all incarnations, Lobo strictly adheres to the contracts he makes with his clients. Gleefully enjoying gore-filled violence and murder, he is an unstoppable force of nature while on a hunt.
He also enjoys hard drinking, vulgar language, and womanizing. His personality is reflected in his Earth-style motorcycle-gang-member clothing and accoutrements; he even rides a motorcycle-themed space cycle on his adventures. He is not a hero who occasionally crosses the line; he is a villain who, for the right price, will do good.
